When Is the Right Time to Inspect Waterproofing?

If you're building a new home, waterproofing is one of the most important stages to get right. Once the tiles are installed, the waterproofing membrane is hidden from view and any damage can be difficult and expensive to rectify.

A common question we get asked is:

"When is the best time to inspect waterproofing?"

The answer is simple.

The best time to inspect waterproofing is after the vanities, doors and architraves have been installed, but before tiling begins.

Why Timing Matters

Many homeowners assume a waterproofing inspection is only about checking compliance with Australian Standards. While compliance is important, timing is equally critical.

By the time waterproofing is complete, multiple trades may still need access to wet areas. Cabinet makers, carpenters, painters and other trades can all be working around waterproofed surfaces before the tiles are installed.

This creates the potential for accidental damage to the waterproofing membrane.

Once the tiles are laid, these areas are covered and can no longer be visually inspected.

Real Site Example

In the video below, captured during a recent Brisbane waterproofing inspection, we found:

  • A broken knife blade left on the waterproofing membrane.

  • Architraves stored directly on top of the waterproofed bath hob.

  • General trade traffic through recently waterproofed areas.

While these issues may appear minor, sharp objects and building materials left on waterproofed surfaces can damage the membrane and compromise the waterproofing system.

This type of damage is not uncommon and is one of the main reasons independent waterproofing inspections can be valuable.

What We Check During a Waterproofing Inspection

At BSPI Inspections, a waterproofing inspection may include:

  • Waterproofing compliance checks.

  • Membrane coverage and continuity.

  • Junctions, penetrations and floor waste detailing.

  • Membrane termination heights.

  • Damage caused by other trades.

  • General workmanship and installation quality.

Our goal is to identify issues before they are covered by tiles.

Why Stage Inspections Matter

Many defects are far easier to rectify during construction than after handover.

A waterproofing inspection is often one of the last opportunities to confirm the waterproofing system remains compliant and undamaged before it disappears beneath the finished surfaces.

That is why timing is so important.
