Defect of the Week – Shower Base Drama Before Tiling

Caught just in time: why a Pre-Tile Inspection can save you thousands
By BSPI Inspections – Brisbane Stage Building Inspections (Open Saturdays!)

This week onsite, we uncovered a serious issue during a defect inspection — just in time.

The builder was pushing to tile the next day, but our inspection revealed that the shower base had not been installed correctly. This poor installation caused a split in the waterproofing membrane — a hidden defect that, if left unnoticed, could lead to catastrophic water damage down the track.

Had this gone ahead, it could have compromised the entire bathroom, leading to costly repairs, leaks, mould, and structural damage.

This is exactly why we strongly recommend a Pre-Tile Inspection. Catching issues like this before tiles go down is critical — once tiled, defects like these are much harder (and more expensive) to detect and fix.

Why This Matters:

  • Water leaks can take months to show — but the damage is already done.

  • Fixing waterproofing issues after tiling can mean ripping everything up.

  • Most homeowners assume new builds are done right — but even brand new homes can hide major defects.

📅 Can’t book during the week? No problem — BSPI Inspections is open Saturdays. We make it easier for busy homeowners to get the peace of mind they deserve.
